Raquel's Scribepost for Janurary 4 2010

Text Book Questions
Pg.104 Questions 3-4

a)12cm-144cm
16cm=256cm
144 cm² + 256 cm² = 400 cm²
Square of 400 cm² = 20 cm

b)16 m = 256 m²

30 m = 900 m²

256 m² + 900 m² = 1156 m²
Square of 1156 m² = 34 m

a)7 cm = 49 cm²
6 cm = 36 cm²
49 cm² + 36 cm² = 85 cm²
Square of 85 cm² = 9.2 cm

b)
11 cm = 121 cm²
8 cm = 64 cm²
121 cm² + 64 cm² = 185 cm²
Square of 185 cm² = 13.6 cm

I know it's late but, I still did it. Anyways, COMMENT. (:

Jemineth's Phytagoras

Pythagoras: #7 finding the value of a leg
(p.s sorry can't upload the pictures to show the question)
Part A : i=9mm g=5mm h=?
csquared-b/asquared = a/b squared
isquared - gsquared = hsquared
9squared - 5aquared = hsquared
(9 x 9 ) - (5 x 5 ) = h squared
81 - 25 = 56 squared
hsquared = 56
square root = 9.48
This shows that the particular triangle isn't a right triangle because the value of leg h is greater than the hypotenuse which supposedly is the longest side.
Part B : r=15mm q=11mm s= ?
csquared-b/asquared = a/b squared
rsquared-qsquared = ssquared
15mmsquared-11mmsquared = ssquared
(15x15)-(11x11) = ssquared
225 - 121 = 104 squared
ssquared = 104
squareroot = 10.1
Again this shows that the particular triangle isn't a right triangle because the value of leg h is greater than the hypotenuse which supposedly is the longest side.

6. Determine the length of the leg for each right triangle.

a) a= 7cm b=? c=25cm

c (2) - a (2) = b (2)
25 (2)- 7(2)= b (2)
(25x25) - (7x7) = b (2)
625- 49= b (2)
576= b (2)
(square root) 576= (square root) b (2)
24= b

b) r= 10cm s= ? t= 26cm

t (2) - s (2) = r (2)
26 (2) - 24 (2) =r (2)
(26x26) - (24x24) = r (2)
676- 576= r (2)
100= r (2)
(suare root) 100 = (square root) r (2)
10= r

sorry i cant upload the pic.

Alex's Pay it Forward

What is 'Pay it Forward'?
Pay it forward is where we do/show a random act of kindness to a person or people. Paying it forward is supposed to make the world a better place, because when you help someone and ask them to pay it forward and they do the same thing as you more and more people get helped.

What Was Your Pay it Forward Act of Kindness?

My Pay it forward was sending supplies to children in Kandahar.

Why Did You Chose This Activity?

I decided to do this when I met one of my moms friends, She would often go to Kandahar to either work at a Tim Hortens at the base or volunteer at a hospital. The reason I chose to do this was because I know how good of a life we have here is and how bad life for a kid in Kandahar.

What Did You Do?

My mother and I made some goodie bags that had pencils, stickers, candy canes, chocolate, puzzles, playdoh, cards and some books.
There were some books and puzzles in there for the adults as well as the children.

When Did You Do Your Act of Kindness?
December 11, my mother went to the post office while I was at school.

How Did Your Act of Kindness Go?
It went great, it wasn't that hard and it was enjoyable to do, knowing that I was helping somebody.

How Did it Feel and How Did The People React?
Well it felt great helping out someone, however I don't know how they reacted because they're about half way around the world.

Did You Ask Them to Pay it Forward?
No, because I didn't want it to feel as if I did it reluctantly and I didn't want to burden them with a task extremely hard to do when your in a war zone.

How Did They React to Your Request?
I don't know how they reacted for 2 reasons, 1 they're about half way around the world, and 2 I didn't ask them.

Why is The Idea of Pay it Forward so Important?
It's important because it teaches us that one person can make a difference.

Why is Pay it Forward Important?
It's important because it makes the world a better place.

Alex's Question #13

The flower bed is not a right triangle, because the Pythagorean relationship says that a2+b2=c2 but 4800 cm2 + 4800 cm2 = 9600 cm2 not 9800 cm2.
