%%%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

Part #1
  • Rate
- A rate is a comparison of 2 quantities measured in different units.

  • Ratio
- A ratio is a comparison of 2 quantities measured in the same units.

The difference between a ratio and a rate is that a rate " compares 2 quantities measured in different units" and a ratio " compares 2 quantities measured in the same units" .

Page #60

4. Determine the unit rate in each situation.
a) An orca swims 110 km in 2 h.
- 55km/hr
b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h.
-64km/hr
c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 min.

-1.5 daffodils/ minute

Page#61

10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in
3 h. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is
the faster cyclist? How do you know?

- They are both equal. How do i know that ? I'am sure of it because i used a ratio table. With a ratio table i found how many kilometers each rode for an hour. They both came up to 2.5. At that time i had to know and follow that whatever i do to one side i do to the other.

Part #2

- My Recipe would look different because you'd have to make additions to the amounts that are put in the recipe to an equivalent amount from the first one but serving 10 people. So in order to do that i used a ratio table to find out how much of each ingredient was serving to one person, which would be dividing by 4. Once solved i then multiply the answer i come up with to 10 for then people.

- For one person you basically do the same thing, the only difference is that once you come up with the answer from dividing from 4 , you stay it because that would be your answer.

Mikayla's ration scribepost

There are different ways to write a ratio.
For example, 4:12
1. As a fraction.
4/12
2. As a decimal.
To turn a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator by it's denominator.
4/12 = 0.33
3. As a percent.
To turn a decimal into a percent, move the decimal point two places to the right.
0.33 = 33%
PS: you can also simplify the ratio.
Ex: 4:12 = 1:3
( I divided both number by 4. )

Mikayla's Coin math

Questions :
What is the value of each type of coin in the jar?
Canadian coins
penny= 1 cent
nickel= 5 cents
dime= 10 cents
quarter= 25 cents
loonie= 1 dollar
twoonie= 2 dollars

How many more coins would it take to fill up the jar?
The jar is about three-quarters full. So if you add a quarter more of the number of coins that are in the jar, then the jar would probably be full.

If the jar was filled with Canadian money, would you need more coins?
No, because unlike US dollars, Canadian money has more coins. So for example, instead of having four US quarters, we can just put one Canadian loonie.

Alexander's Post for Question 16

Question #16

Heather used a copier to ma
ke the following 50% reduction.

a) Write the ratio of the length A'B' compared to the length of AB.

The ratio of the length of A'B' compared to the length of AB is 1:2

b)Write the ratio of the length of A'C' compared to the length of AC

The ratio is also 1:2

c)Use your knowledge of ratio and percent to explain the meaning of a 50% reduction.

A 50% reduction is where something is reduced by 50%, that means it will be cut in half. Example if 100 would be reduced by 50% it would become 50

Yes I know it's late but I can't get to my text book so I had to use alternative sources.

What I Learned And What I Need To Work On

I really need to work on reading the questions more carefully. To help me solve the questions easier and more understandable, and to enable me to give a clear and understandable answer to people reading my answer or text.

Another thing i need to work on is always remembering rules on using a ratio table .

  1. No Adding or Subtracting In Specific Ways
  2. Whatever You Do To One Side You Must Do To The Other
Last but not the least is that , i have to learn and remember to use the faster ways to get an answer to a question. But at the same time remembering to check over my work, as much as possible to make sure things are as right as it seems, because doing things the faster way doesn't always turn successful "specially" in math.

Total to blue to purple (12:3:1)

Ratio notation, Fraction, Decimal, and Percent

Shades of green to shades of pink ( G:P ) 3/2 , 1.5 , 150 %

Equivalent Ratios

Equivalent ratios are two ratios that have the same value when simplified. For exaple, 3:12 is the ratio of green colored crayons to the total number of crayons. 1:4 is equivalent to 3:12 because 3 and 12 and both divisible by 3. Divide both 3 and 12 by 3, and you get 1:4.

Questions

1) Basing on the picture above, make a ratio of the number of vowels to the number of consonants. Express it in lowest terms.

2) How do you know if you can or cannot simplify a ratio ?

3) In lowest terms, make a ratio of the number of blue crayons to the total number of crayons.

BOB2

The mistakes I did on the test were mostly on the multiple choice questions. I just didn't put the ratio in the right order. The answer is supposed to be 3:7, but instead I chose 7:3. Another mistake I did was that I got the wrong answer for finding the percent.

4. Four students are running for student council president. Of 30 students polled, 15 chose Mikw, 3 chose Patricia, 6 chose Brian, and the rest chose Karen. What is the ratio of votes for girls to votes for boys in the student council election? express the ratio in lowest terms.

a. 3:7 b. 7:3 c. 15;6 d. 21:9

Votes for girls: votes for boys

9:21

9/21 divide by 3/3

=3/7 = 3:7

#21. A golden rectangle has a length to width ratio called the golden ratio, which approximately 1.62.

a) Which of the following dimensions of rectangles are examples of golden rectangles?

  • 24 m x 38.9 m = 1.62 Golden rectangle
  • 52 cm x 120.5 = 2.31
  • 348 mm x 565 mm = 1.62 Golden rectangle

I got the answers NOT by multiplying the length and width but by dividing the length by the width.

b) If the width of a golden rectangle is 6.4, what is it's length? Give your answer to the nearest tenth of a metre.

On the future test will put the ratios in lowest term even if it doesn's say to simply.

total = 30 students
3+15+6 = 24
30-24 = 6 votes for Karen
My mistake is by not following the order of word ratio.
On future test ill reread the test to make sure the i follow the word ratio order.

My mistake was not understanding the question.

3.) TWO, THREE PART RATIOS :
a.) pink to green to blue - (2:3:4)
b.) peach to yellow to orange - (1:2:2)
4.) Here is my ratio in ratio notation, fraction, decimal, percent, and a word form:
The ratio i chose was green to yellow.
Ratio Notation: 3:2
Fraction: 3/2
Decimal: 1.5
Percent: 150%

To get the the fraction you should know the ratio notation, then to get the decimal you have to divide the numerator and the denominater of the fraction. Then to get the percent you multiply the decimal by 100, then you get your answer.

Making An Equivalent Ratio

To make equivalent ratios, you have to know that if you do something to one side that you do it to the other side as well.

3 Questions

1.)What would some of the ratios be in the lowest terms?
2.) Give me one equivalent ratio for 2/1?
3.)Show how the ratio peach to blue could be shown as a fraction, decimal, and a percent.

BOB 2

I made lots of mistakes in my test, but I'm going to tell you two of them that didn't really make any sense to me when I got to them.

The first one was -

8.) A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 5:7. If the width of the photo is 9 cm, the length of the ph0to is

I got this answer wrong b/c i just guessed, But next time for me to remember I will, get the length to width ratio then get the other length (9) and then make it into a equivalent fraction, then multiply 5 and 1,8 to get to 9 then do it to the other side too. So it would look like 5/9=7/?
then like I said earlier multiply the fraction by 1.8, then y answer for 7/? would be 12.6.(I got 1.8 from dividing 5 and 9.

Another One-

18.) In a student election Carol gets 60% of the votes. If there were 485 votes cast, how many votes did carol get?

I didn't get to answer it b/c I was still trying to figure out the answer. But a way for me to remember to answer it correctly is that, I would use a ratio table starting with VOTES and on the other side it would be 60%.

The two questions-

10. What percent of all the phones were Motorola?
a. 14.4% b. 25% c. 50% d. 77%

18. In a student election Carol gets 60% of the votes. if there were 485 votes cast, how many votes did carol get?

BOB2
This is my bob for extra marks. I almost failed my test so that I need to work on some stuff. Like when to use a ratio table, I have no idea when to use a ratio table ( that's embarrassing ). Like the last question.

18) In a student election Carol gets 60% of the votes. If there were 485 votes cast, how many votes did Carol get?
My answer is 194 instead of 291. When I was doing the test, I have no clue what to do until when we went over it in class. I didn't know that we have to use a ratio table to show our work. What I did was I used a calculator. I kinda guess.

The other mistakes I got is kind of like the same thing as the one above because they all use ratio table to find the answers..

Question:
1. How do you know when to use a ratio table?

PART TO WHOLE RATIO:
Red:Total 10:23
Blue:Total1:23

3 PART RATIO:
Green:Blue:Yellow 6:1:6
Total:Letters:Green 23:7:6

Here is the ratio that I picked to show a ratio notation, fraction, decimal, percent. Blue:Red. Here is how I did it:
Ratio Notation: 1:10
Fraction:1/10
Decimal: 0.10
Percent:10%
I got the fraction by adding up the numbers of blue m&m's and red m&m's. I got the decimal by dividing the fraction and I got the percent by multiplying the decimal by 100.

Making An Equivalent Ratios
blue to red, 1:10 2:20 3:30 4:40 5:50. These are all equivalent fractions. When your trying to make an equivalent fraction you have to know that if you do something to one side you do it to the other. So, 1:10 is equivalent to 2:20 because you multiplied 1 by 2 and so what you do on one side you do it on the other by doing that 10 times 2 equals 20. So the ratio is 2:20.

3 QUESTIONS
1: If you make a ratio of blue:total. What would be the fraction decimal and the percentage be and How did you do it?
2: What would the equivalent ratio look like if it was 6:1?
3: What if there was 3 more blue then red? What would the fraction decimal and percentage look like?

I also need to write on my paper on showing how I got the answer. The next time I do a test, I will study more harder so that I know what to do. Jerick873 BOB Ratio

This is my Bob blog for extra marks .

First I must make 3 part-to-part ratios :
a) green to yellow - 7:5
b) blue to red - 2:10, 1:5
c) green to red- 7:10
Next I must make 2 part-total ratios:
a) green to total - 7:24
b) red to total - 10:24
Now I must make 2 part-to-part-to-part ratios:
a) yellow to blue to green - 5:2:7
b) red to green to total- 10:7:24
Here is my ratio expressed in ratio notation, fraction, decimal, percent, and word form
2:10(1:5) , 1/5, 0.2 , 20%, blue to red. To do this , when the ratio is in a fraction you divide the two numbers and you get the decimal form and to get to the percentage form you multiply the decimal by 100 because percents are out of 100
Here is where I show how to create equivalent ratio
blue to red 2:10, 4:20, 6:30, 8:40, 10:50 . To make equivalent ratios , what you got to keep in mind is , Whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other , so 2:10 is equivalent to 1:5 ... so you divide the 2 by 2 and since you did that to one side you have to do it to the other so 10 divided by 2 is 5 so 1:5.
Here are my 3 questions
1. What is the ratio of yellow to red?
2. What is an equivalent ratio to 2:24 (blue to total)
3. Show 2:4 as a fraction , decimal and percent.
BONUS QUESTION
1. Do you like M&Ms?

THANKYOU FOR READING THIS POST
p.s. you dont have to answer the bonus question it was just for fun :D and the other blue is on the left side squished in with between 2 reds and one green

Part 2 Bob 2

Well part is about my test , to be honest im kind of proud of my mark but i know there is still room for improvement .

Well my mistakes on my test mostly had to do with simplifying. Example

18:27 , i put 6:9 and it said to express in lowest terms but i didn't put it in lowest terms , but the answer would of been 2:3.

and there was another one about the cards in the deck. red cards to whole deck and i answered 2:4 , i forgot to simplify and 1:2 was there. But in my defense it did not say express lowest terms but I guess it was my fault cause we always have to simplify.
