Camilles 2 minutes to make a difference Reflection

VERSION 1

VERSION 2

Please relect and talk about the changes you made between the first and final cut of your movie. Were the student comments helpful in making your final cut better?

For version 1 we made the text really small and white, and we also made the transitions to fast and you couldnt read it . So for version 2 we changed the color white to yellow and we made the text larger. We also changed the the transitions a little slower. The comments were really helpful they gave us advice of how to change the font color, size and to make the transitions slower.

How did you find your expert? List 3 important points your expert added to your movie. What did you learn from your expert?

We went onto google and searched up environmental activist in Winnipeg. Then a guy named Robin Bryan popped up and we clicked it so its showed us a video of him getting an environment award and how he made a difference. So we searched where he worked and he works at the Manitoba Wilderness committee. He told us that we have the largest forest in Manitoba right now, and he told us that we have to pay a little more for the things we buy because its hard to dispose of them. For example , plastic bags at grocery store you have to pay for them. We learned that us youths should not take the world for granted, because the world isnt going to be around forever if we dont protect it.

What was your greatest success in the 2 minutes project. What skills will you take away with you and use in the future?

Our greatest success was that we finished the movie on time and we got our information and put it onto the video. The skills I would take away with me in the future is that to always help the environment even if the things you do to help is not big.

What frustrated you during the movie making process? What strategies did you use to become successful?

The thing that frustrated me was the program that we used to make the video. We used windows movie maker. I wasnt really good at using the program because it was confusing and I didnt know what to press. The strategies that helped us become successful is to use our time very wisely, concentrated on our work and to understand why were doing this project and how to make a difference to make a our video better.

Why is the 2 Minutes project important to Grade 8 Students?

I think this project is important to us because we dont know whats really happening in the real world, and we need to start making a difference now because if we dont start who will? We only focus on the things we want to see , not the things we NEED to see. Us grade 8s are now realizing the real disasters the world is going through.

How will you make a difference in the future?

I can help earth in many ways, we can all help by using recyclable things, recycle, start cleaning up the environment. There are so many ways to help. We can help the earth anytime not just on earth day, anytime is fine the purpose of it is just to make a difference and understand that the world needs OUR help.

KEY WORDS

• Percents can be combined by adding to solve problems. 5% + 7% = 12%

• To calculate the increase in a number,

You can add the combined percent
amount to the original number.
12% of 100 = 0.12 × 100 = 12
100 + 12 = 112

You can multiply the original number
by a single percent greater than 100.
112% of 100 = 1.12 × 100
= 112

• Percents of percents can be used to determine amounts that result from
consecutive percent increases or decreases.

Show you know

What is the final sale price at each store? Which is a better buy?
Explain your thinking.
Store A: 50% off one day only
Store B: 25% off one day followed by 25% off the reduced price the
second day

200 is the price and to get 50 % you divide 200 by 2 which is 100 so the sale price is 100 dollars.

The price is 200 and to find 25% you divide 200 by 4 and the other side by 4 . Which is 50. 50=25 %. so 200-50 =150 and the percent is 75 percent. you subtract 50 from 200 because 50 is 25% and the discount is 25%.
So then the next day its on sale again but 25% off yesterdays price . So 150 is the new 100% then to find 25% 150 divided by 4 = 37.50 and remember whatever you do on one side you do to the other side. So 25% is 37.50 so then you take 150 -37.50 and it equals 112.50
Store A is the better buy because the sale price is 100 and the sale price at store b is 112.50.

7. What is the height of the wheelchair ramp? Give your answer to the nearest tenth of a centimetre.

c2 - b2 = a2
802 - 792 = a2
(80x80) - (79-79) = a2
6400 - 6241 = a2
159 = a2
√159 = √a2
12.6 cm= a

The height of the wheelchair ramp would be 12.6 cm tall

Winnipeg Harvest

What is Winnipeg Harvest ?
Its a warehouse were people donate food, and volunteers sort them out and put them into boxes and the drivers drive the food to food banks around Winnipeg.

What did we do there ?
Alex,Brayden,Jem and I and Mr. Harbeck were packing non perishable food items into a plastic bag. In each bag we put four items that contains grains, vegetables, and soup. After we put these items in to the bags, we get a bigger bag and we put seven littler bags into it.

Why is Winnipeg Harvest so important ?
Winnipeg harvest is very important because they support food items for people who have nothing to eat. And they work very, very hard to supply people food.

Winnipeg Harvest was a very fun and interesting experience. It helped me learn more about what they do there and how they help people. The volunteers and workers were very nice to us. Kate told us how they deliver the food items to the food banks. Also a nice man Nick, helped us tie the bags together. There were more nice people that helped us. They were very nice to us. Its like a second home to these volunteers and workers. We even got to have a break, and have some nice and warm hot chocolate. We took some pictures there but i didnt put it on this post because when i checked the SP blog it wasnt there. So if you would like to see the pictures it could be seen at the sargent park blog.

Thank you Mr. Harbeck for taking us there. I had such a fun time and an amazing experience. I would love to go there again if possible. THANK YOU !

ps. if you would like to volunteer you should visit the site www.winnipegharvest.com you'd have a fun and amazing time.

Thank you for reading my post ! bye ! (:

Today in math class we had a quiz on estimating square roots. The Question was....

WITHOUT a calculator estimate the square root of 67. Use a number line to show all of your work.

After that we , corrected some of the pages in our homework book. Then we took a piece of looseleaf and folded it in half then, ripped it in the middle. On 1 side we put Perfect Square Chart. So we made a chart just like this one.
P.S sorry if the writing is too small.
Remember to do your homework on page 99, numbers 10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21
AND* use a number line for questions 4,5,7 and 9.
AND STUDY FOR THE UPCOMING TEST ON WEDNESDAY !

How I stopped an Alien Invasion by using Proportion

page :67

#4 Determine the unit rate.

a) Three diner rolls cost 99 cents.

You make a ratio table then put cents on the left side and rolls on the right side. Under the cents put 99 and under the rolls put 3. Divide the right side by 3 and the other side by three also, it will give you its unit rate. Which makes 3/3 = 1 and 99/3 = 33. 3 cents a roll.

b)Seven identical objects have a mass
of 14 kg

Make a ratio table the on one side put objects then on the other side put kg. Under object put 7 because there are 7 objects and under kg put 14 because it has a mass of 14 kg. Then to find the unit rate you need to divide 14 by 14 which is one. Then you do the same thing on the other side. 7 divided by 14 + 0.5.

page: 68

21. David can saw a log into three pieces in
7 min. If he continues sawing at a constant
rate, how long will it take him to saw a
similar log into six pieces?

Make a ratio table then on one side put pieces and on the other side put minutes. Then under pieces put 3 because he can saw 3 pieces. Then under minutes put 7 because he can saw 3 logs in 7 minutes. Then you need to find how many minutes would he take if he saws 6 pieces of logs. So 3 x 2 =6 + 6 logs. Then under the 7 put 14 because 7 x2 =14.

24. a) Describe a pattern you could use to find
the next fraction in the following set of
fractions.

The pattern is that the numerator goes up by 1 and the denominator goes up by 2's

1/2

2/4

3/6

4/8

The pattern is that the numerator goes up by 5's and the denominator goes up by 6.

The Aliens are taking over the earth !

One day me and Jem was playing basketball in my backyard. There was something in the sky, I thought it was a balloon. Then I came tumbling down it was a UFO and it ruined the grass in my backyard. Then green aliens came out of UFO and walked towards Jem and I. The aliens told us " We are going to destroy your planet and make it a huge crater for us to live on. But if you answer these 3 proportion questions we will leave and nver come back again." We told them bring it on. The green alien asked me "Three rolls for 99 cents what is its unit rate ?" I answered " The unit rate is 33 cents for 1 roll. The alien was surprised that I got the answer. Then the purple alien came up to Jem and asked her "David can saw a log into three pieces in
7 min. If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take him to saw a similar log into six pieces?" Jem answered " It would take him 14 minutes to cut 6 pieces of wood. The purple alien gasped. Then this pink polka dotted alien came up to me and asked "Describe a pattern you could use to find the next fraction 1/2, 2/4, 3/6." I answered, " The next fraction is 4/8 because the numerator goes up by 1 and the denominator goes up by 2. The weird polka dotted alien was surprised. Then the leader told us you win, we will never come back ever again. Good-bye.

Bob and Ratio

Today at school we had to make ratios about a picture which can be seen at Sargent Park Math Zone. Our homework is posted there also. So here's my homework. (:

1. 3 part to part ratios
green to purple
3:1

blue to green
3:3

pink to orange
2:1

2. 2 part to whole ratios
green to total
3:12

total to pink
12:2

3. 2 part to part to part ratios
gold to pink to green
1:2:3

orange to blue to silver
1:3:1

4. the pick ratio 3:2

ratio notation : 3:2

fraction: 3/2

decimal: 1.5

percent: 150%

5. Equivalent Ratios

3:2

To make a equivalent ratio you can multiply or divide the number. For example, 6:4 /2 = 3:2
6:4 x 2 = 12:8.

6. 3 questions

what is the ratio of red to green ?

Is the ratio equivalent ? if so, why ? if not why ?

What is the part to total ratio of orange ?

Bob part 2

What mistakes I did and how can I improve it.

I made alot of mistakes, I didn't simplify the answer. For number 17 i put 115/92 = 10/6. I put 6 instead of 8 and i didn't show my work. I can improve my mistakes by simplifying the answer, read the question carefully, think about the question before I answer, and re- read my test before I hand it in.

Rewrite 2 questions that gave me difficulty.

Four students are running for student council president. Of 30 students polled, 14 chose Mikey, 5 chose Patty, 7 chose Bria, and the rest chose Kara. What is the ratio for votes for girls to boys in the student council election? Express the ratio in the lowest terms.

19:11 11:19 16:3 14:7

You have 6 red balls, 8 yellow balls, and 3 blue balls. In lowest terms , what is the ratio of red balls to total balls ?

17:6 8:3 6:17 9:3

and please try to answer these question on the comment box ! thank you.

Camille's coin math for October 9, 2009

Coin Math

Today we made questions about this jar of coins. We know that this is American money and it has 100 $ inside the jar. We had to come up with some questions for the jar of money. Then we shared it with the class. For homework we have to pick 2 questions, 1 purple question and a red one or blue . Then we had to answer those questions on the blog. So here it is . (:
1. How would you sort the coins ?
I would sort them by pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters because those are the only coins in America. America's 1$ is a bill. Its different from Canada. Canada has loonies and toonies which is 1$ and 2$ coins.
2. Would the jar look the same if it was converted to Canadian money ?
No, it wont look the same because Canadian money has more coins than American money. They both have pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters but Canada has loonies and toonies. So it wont look the same because loonies and toonies are big and they would take up space in the jar.
Coin math part 2
Today in class we talked about the jar of coins. And we made a bunch of ratio tables that explains the jar of coins. So for homework we have to answer these 2 questions, how much of the jar is filled by Canadian coins ?, and could you fill the jar with $100 American and $100 Canadian? and why ?
How much of the jar is filled by Canadian coins ?
When using Canadian coins the jar would be filled by around 35 %.
Could you fill the jar with $ 100 American and $ 100 Canadian ? and why ?
No you could not fill the jar with $ 100 American and $ 100 Canadian together because it would over fill and spill. In a jar of American coins 780 which is three fourths. and if you convert that too percent it would be 75% . Then in another jar of Canadian coins 370 which i think is 35%. So then you put the coins together in one jar. Then add the percents together 75% + 35% = 110 %. It over fills alot of coins. So you cant fill the American and Canadian coins in one jar.
Thank you for reading my post ! I hope i didnt confuse you guys or anything.
Please comment about What I did wrong and what you like about my blog.
* REMEMBER TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK (: *
