Four 4's



These two equations are the same even though one is using a fraction while the other is using a division sign , but they do both mean the same thing.

You can write divide like 4/4 or 4÷4 they equal the same thing just written in a different way.

how much do the coins add up to ?
All the coins in the jar add up to $100

Would the jar look the same if the money was Canadian?
It would have less of each coin because Canada has Loonies and Toonies compared to Americans that have bills as dollars. So it would look a lot less if it was all Canadian.

Coin Math part 2

If you started dropping coins into the jar on January 1 , 2010, what day would you finish filling up the jar?

If the jar was filled with all american coins, it would have 1280 coins in it. This filled up 3 quarters of the jar. If you find how much coins can fit in the whole jar it will make this problem easier. So what you do is find how much 1280 divided by 3 multiplied by 4 is.
This gives you about 1707.

So if there is 1707 coins in there jar it would take me approximately 4.79 years to fill the whole jar by putting one coin in it each day. So it would take be around 4 years, so what I'm thinking that it is 79 percent of the year, and that would be around 284 days, I estimate 4 years and 284 days,
That would be October 11, 2014.

How much of the jar is filled with Canadian coins ?

The jar has 370 coins in it. We have found out that 3/4 of the jar is 1280 , so if you divide that by 4 you get 320 , so now we know its more than 1/4 of the jar. So I'm guessing its around 27-30 percent of the whole jar.

There are different ways to write a ratio.
For example, 4:12
1. As a fraction.
4/12
2. As a decimal.
To turn a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator by it's denominator.
4/12 = 0.33
3. As a percent.
To turn a decimal into a percent, move the decimal point two places to the right.
0.33 = 33%
PS: you can also simplify the ratio.
Ex: 4:12 = 1:3
( I divided both number by 4. )

The jar is about three-quarters full. So if you add a quarter more of the number of coins that are in the jar, then the jar would probably be full.

If the jar was filled with Canadian money, would you need more coins?
No, because unlike US dollars, Canadian money has more coins. So for example, instead of having four US quarters, we can just put one Canadian loonie.

Both equations may seem different but they are actually the same. The reason they look different is because one is written horizontally and the other is written in fraction form. The fraction bar means the same as the division symbol, that's why these two equations mean the same thing.

The Three things I know about graphing are:
1.) There is always an interval on a bar graph(a.k.a bar chart), line graph, double bar graph, and double line graph.
2.)There are 3 ways you can mislead a graph or distort : Distorting the Scale , Distorting the Size of the Bars and Distorting the Visuals.
3.)Line graphs are for showing something over time. Bar graphs are for comparing data by categories or groups(i think). Circle graphs are best for comparing data by using percents. Pictographs are best for comparing data using pictures as a representative.
What I know that would improve my test:
I could've improved if i put more information, exspecially better sentences(which I didn't do). Plus maybe i Should've used that paper that was handed out. && I should've made everything better, like my drawings, my writing etc.

Equivalent Ratios

Equivalent ratios are two ratios that have the same value when simplified. For exaple, 3:12 is the ratio of green colored crayons to the total number of crayons. 1:4 is equivalent to 3:12 because 3 and 12 and both divisible by 3. Divide both 3 and 12 by 3, and you get 1:4.

1) Basing on the picture above, make a ratio of the number of vowels to the number of consonants. Express it in lowest terms.

2) How do you know if you can or cannot simplify a ratio ?

3) In lowest terms, make a ratio of the number of blue crayons to the total number of crayons.

The mistakes I did on the test were mostly on the multiple choice questions. I just didn't put the ratio in the right order. The answer is supposed to be 3:7, but instead I chose 7:3. Another mistake I did was that I got the wrong answer for finding the percent.


4. Four students are running for student council president. Of 30 students polled, 15 chose Mikw, 3 chose Patricia, 6 chose Brian, and the rest chose Karen. What is the ratio of votes for girls to votes for boys in the student council election? express the ratio in lowest terms.

a. 3:7 b. 7:3 c. 15;6 d. 21:9

- My answer was d/21:9. The actual answer was a/3:7. My mistake was I misread the question/word ratio. In the future I will read through the question twice.
7. A rapid transit train has 39 passengers on it as it starts its run. At the first stop 12 passengers get off and 18 passengers get on. What is the ratio of the number of passenger who were on the train as it arrived in the first station to the number who were on the train when it left the first station? Express your answer in lowest terms.
- My answer was d/27:39. The acutal answer was b/13:15. My mistake was I didn't read the question well enough. In the future I will read the question more well.

Caitlin.T's BOB Ratio



1.) THREE, PART-TO-PART RATIOS:
a.) green to yellow - (3:2)
b.) pink to grey - (2:1)
c.) peach to blue - (1:4)
2.) TWO, PART TO TOTAL RATIOS:
a.) orange to total - (2:22)
b.) white to total - (1:22
3.) TWO, THREE PART RATIOS :
a.) pink to green to blue - (2:3:4)
b.) peach to yellow to orange - (1:2:2)
4.) Here is my ratio in ratio notation, fraction, decimal, percent, and a word form:
The ratio i chose was green to yellow.
Ratio Notation: 3:2
Fraction: 3/2
Decimal: 1.5
Percent: 150%

To get the the fraction you should know the ratio notation, then to get the decimal you have to divide the numerator and the denominater of the fraction. Then to get the percent you multiply the decimal by 100, then you get your answer.

Making An Equivalent Ratio

To make equivalent ratios, you have to know that if you do something to one side that you do it to the other side as well.

I made lots of mistakes in my test, but I'm going to tell you two of them that didn't really make any sense to me when I got to them.

The first one was -

8.) A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 5:7. If the width of the photo is 9 cm, the length of the ph0to is

I got this answer wrong b/c i just guessed, But next time for me to remember I will, get the length to width ratio then get the other length (9) and then make it into a equivalent fraction, then multiply 5 and 1,8 to get to 9 then do it to the other side too. So it would look like 5/9=7/?
then like I said earlier multiply the fraction by 1.8, then y answer for 7/? would be 12.6.(I got 1.8 from dividing 5 and 9.

Another One-

18.) In a student election Carol gets 60% of the votes. If there were 485 votes cast, how many votes did carol get?


I didn't get to answer it b/c I was still trying to figure out the answer. But a way for me to remember to answer it correctly is that, I would use a ratio table starting with VOTES and on the other side it would be 60%.

10. What percent of all the phones were Motorola?
a. 14.4% b. 25% c. 50% d. 77%
