Camille's coin math for October 9, 2009

Coin Math

Today we made questions about this jar of coins. We know that this is American money and it has 100 $ inside the jar. We had to come up with some questions for the jar of money. Then we shared it with the class. For homework we have to pick 2 questions, 1 purple question and a red one or blue . Then we had to answer those questions on the blog. So here it is . (:
1. How would you sort the coins ?
I would sort them by pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters because those are the only coins in America. America's 1$ is a bill. Its different from Canada. Canada has loonies and toonies which is 1$ and 2$ coins.
2. Would the jar look the same if it was converted to Canadian money ?
No, it wont look the same because Canadian money has more coins than American money. They both have pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters but Canada has loonies and toonies. So it wont look the same because loonies and toonies are big and they would take up space in the jar.
Coin math part 2
Today in class we talked about the jar of coins. And we made a bunch of ratio tables that explains the jar of coins. So for homework we have to answer these 2 questions, how much of the jar is filled by Canadian coins ?, and could you fill the jar with $100 American and $100 Canadian? and why ?
How much of the jar is filled by Canadian coins ?
When using Canadian coins the jar would be filled by around 35 %.
Could you fill the jar with $ 100 American and $ 100 Canadian ? and why ?
No you could not fill the jar with $ 100 American and $ 100 Canadian together because it would over fill and spill. In a jar of American coins 780 which is three fourths. and if you convert that too percent it would be 75% . Then in another jar of Canadian coins 370 which i think is 35%. So then you put the coins together in one jar. Then add the percents together 75% + 35% = 110 %. It over fills alot of coins. So you cant fill the American and Canadian coins in one jar.
Thank you for reading my post ! I hope i didnt confuse you guys or anything.
Please comment about What I did wrong and what you like about my blog.
